HAWKEYE, Iowa (KCRG) – With a population of just over 430 people, The small town of Hawkeye’s mental and physical health resources are scarce.
“We don’t have access. There’s nothing, no medical facilities…But in talking with Jordan and Bethany and Linda and my daughter, we’ve been those people for each other.” said Co-founder of the Healthy Hawkeye Coalition, Melodee Woods.
But Melodee Woods, a resident and founder of the Healthy Hawkeye Coalition, says the group is starting to change that.
It started as a walking group last fall, providing any interested residents with a way to make new friends and get some exercise.
But Co-founder Jordan Sherman says it’s become so much more.
“Coming back to Hawkeye, the (neighborliness) I grew up with it was gone for a lot of years… so that was where we just kind of rallied the troops and said let’s all do better and be better.” said Sherman. She also owns the coffee shop where the group frequently meets for games and meals.
Since its formation, roughly 10 to 15 residents aged 6 months to 70 years old have raised money for local veterans, picked up litter, and more.
“It goes beyond just the healthy side of things, it really is family… We help each other out, we take care of each other. It’s closed knit, but it’s open to anyone.” said Member Bethany Cook.
But members say the biggest impact has come from forming new relationships and allowing this small community to thrive.
“It’s evolved into friendships and families that aren’t blood related.” Woods said.
The group is hoping to host more programming for the town’s children, and potentially even become a non-profit. But for now, they say they’re welcoming anyone interested with open ears and open hearts.
